Richmond Scottish Rite Guard
Valley of Richmond
Orient of Virginia
The Scottish Rite Guard of the Valley of Richmond was founded March 1919. Its purpose is to assist the officers of the Richmond Bodies of the Scottish Rite in conferring degrees and render assistance to the officers and members in any capacity needed and generally to promote good fellowship among the membership of The Rite. Membership in the guard shall be divided into three classes: Active, Reserve and Senior.
The Active membership shall consist of not more than 35 men, including the officers. The number of Reserve members shall not exceed 5 men. Active members shall be elected from the Reserve list based on seniority. Reserve members shall serve one year apprenticeship to become eligible for Active membership. Senior membership is available to those Active Guard members who have completed 15 years of active service or who have incurred any physical disability which prohibits participation.
Each member of the Guard, Active and Reserve shall be required to attend a minimum of seventy-five percent of regular meetings which includes the Two Reunions of the Richmond Valley of the Scottish Rite. Membership in the Guard is selected by secret ballot. No one shall be considered for membership unless he has been an active member of The Rite for one year. The name of a prospective member shall be proposed by an Active Member of the Richmond Scottish Rite Guard at a regular meeting of the Guard. If the candidate receives two negative ballots he is rejected. If elected, the candidate shall be contacted by the Guard Secretary/Treasurer. He will explain the Guard rules and determine that the candidate agrees and accepts to become a Reserve member in the Guard. At no time shall any prospective member be told that he is being, will be, or has been considered for membership.
